Qualitative Respiratory Fit Testing (QLFT)

Qualitative fit testing for N95, half-face, and full-face respirators, aligned with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requirements.

What to Expect

The process includes sensitivity screening, instruction on donning and doffing the respirator, user seal checks, the full qualitative fit testing protocol, and documentation for your compliance records.

⚠️ Important:

OSHA requires a medical evaluation before fit testing. Employers must arrange this with a licensed provider, as FACTS does not provide medical evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Qualitative fit testing is an OSHA-approved method used to determine whether a respirator properly seals to your face. It uses a test agent—such as saccharin or Bitrex—that can be detected by taste or smell. If you can’t detect the agent during the test, your respirator fits correctly.

  • OSHA requires fit testing annually or sooner if there are changes that could affect the fit of your respirator, such as weight fluctuations, facial hair changes, dental work, or switching to a different respirator model or size.

  • Yes. OSHA regulations require that participants complete a medical evaluation before any fit testing. We can provide referral resources upon request to help you complete this requirement.

  • We provide qualitative fit testing for N95, half-face, and full-face respirators. Testing ensures your equipment meets OSHA 1910.134 compliance and provides optimal protection.

  • Arrive clean-shaven in the respirator’s sealing area. Facial hair can compromise the seal. Avoid eating, drinking (except water), smoking, or chewing gum for at least 15 minutes before the test to reduce interference with test sensitivity. The employer or participant should provide the respirator(s) to be tested (make, model, and size). Plan for about 20 minutes per person.
